Tourism is the fastest growing industry in South Africa and by far in the Western Cape. The knock-on effect of Tourism for all stakeholders in a region such as ours is well known but in terms of job creation this is huge. To expose visitors to the Swartland region may also broaden the base of rate payers as they may be tempted to live and build houses here. Tourism is the easiest and cheapest way to strengthen our local economy. To stimulate our local economy via Tourism a huge professional effort should be launched to expose the potential tourists to what we can offer. Underfunded and undermanned tourist offices will not do the trick. Swartland Municipality (SM) has got a golden opportunity to pave the way for such an exercise given the fact that the rebuilding of the N7 reaches completion.
Local people has already indicated their willingness to invest as scores of guest houses, restaurants, shops, cellar doors etc. have opened their doors with their own money to participate in the potential influx of tourists and more is still to come. We as a region should not miss out on this and we want to urge SM to build it very strongly into their future economic strategic inisiatives and plans. Much more as we have seen so far.
